Fiber
Optic MiniCourse: Reading An OTDR Trace
Launch Cable
The OTDR setup requires a launch cable to allow the
OTDR trace to settle down past the dead zone. The launch
cable also provides a connector to mate to the cable
under test to allow testing at that connection. Launch
cables must match the fiber type of the cable under test
and have a connector that can mate to its connector.
Typical launch cables are ~100m for multimode fiber and
~1km for singlemode fiber, although those lengths may
vary by application and OTDR capability.
